On July 1, Facebook silently removed the 20 percent text rule required for Page Cover Images from its page guidelines. However, the 20 percent rule for Cover Images remains in two sections of Facebook Help. It’s possible that these sections haven’t been updated to reflect the change yet.
In Facebook Help the sections are:
- What are the guidelines for my page’s cover photo? The answer still says “cover photos must not include images with more than 20 percent text.”
- Text in images – it still says, “… may not include more than 20 percent text in the image… … this applies to… … the cover photo of your page.”
With the 20 percent text rule being removed for Page Cover Images, companies don’t have to worry about going over their text limit. However, visual content is substantially more appealing to consumers, especially at the top of your page. You don’t want to overdo it and fill up your entire Cover Image with text.
The reason visual content is very appealing to consumers is because our eyes notice color, then layout, then image, then the first 3 to 5 words, in that exact order. So when you’re working on your Cover Image, take time to make the best choice. Look at your Timeline and Cover Photo as an opportunity to shine and sell.
Here are some additional tips on how to use Facebook for marketing. The most important marketing goals for any Facebook campaign are: to engage existing customers and keep them clients, and to attract and engage new sales leads.
According to Whishpond, you should break down your marketing into 10 percent sales pitch, 20 percent context which includes text and images, and 70 percent engaging with other posts. Responding to messages and chit-chatting are very important, because you’re validating the presence of others.
The type of content you should post for that 20 percent varies. You can post interesting information about your industry, photos of your employees succeeding or enjoying the work place, and anything else you might talk about at a networking party. There are a variety of Facebook apps that you can use in your marketing strategy, such as surveys, refer a friend contests, or exclusive Facebook giveaways. Make sure you tag and share photos, so they post on other people’s walls and news feeds. This way all their friends and connections will see them as well.
The best time to post is between 7 AM and 2 PM, because this is when people on Facebook are truly engaging. Review the “Track Insights” section of your page so you will know when people are viewing and engaging with your posts. This is also a great way to determine which of your posts are the most interesting.
When you have very important posts that you want everyone to see, pin it to the top of your page. If you want to promote it, you can spend anywhere between $5 to $50, so Facebook will promote it at the top of everyone’s newsfeeds.
If your page is new and you don’t have a lot of friends, you need to increase your friends list. There’s no point in posting all this content, if there’s no one to see it. Your goal is to have many friends see your post, then share with their friends, who then share with their friends. This way your posts are shared and viewed by a lot of potential new customers. If you run out of friends and acquaintances to add to your friends list, you can advertise your Facebook page for $5 a day. Facebook will allow you to target your ads by zip codes, gender, age, marital status, parental status, and interests.
